Private instruction, 1 on 1 with a teacher, is by far the most potent way to receive knowledge, in my experience. You can ask all the questions you want, all of your personal needs are the forefront of the session, you can do all the poses & practices that you desire & you get to decide how much time you spend working on them.
When working with a new student, I usually start private classes by doing a full body postural analysis. This helps me get clear as to what your imbalances are & helps me immediately start creating a customized sequence of practices that will empower you to bring your muscles, bones, breath, mind, emotions & spirit back into balance.
Every movement you do, one set of muscle contracts, and an opposing set relaxes. Most of these processes are happening without us being conscious of them; and when we're unconscious & not fully in our body, compensation becomes more likely & this forms the basis of most of our aches and pains. Something is used too much & becomes too strong, something else is not used enough & becomes weak. The strong muscles literally start pulling the bones out of alignment & pain gradually arises as the tendons get too long, or the muscle or bones start pushing against nerves. This is how the vast majority of people's aches & pains arise over time. Every single body has these rotational patterns of compensation, it's just that some bodies are more deeply rotating out of alignment & those are the ones that have more pain.
As yogi's, we strive for higher consciousness, so becoming aware of your particular patterns of strength and weakness is very desirable so that we can actually do something to affect these patterns. It's my job to help people become aware of these patterns, to empower them with the awareness, knowledge & practices to return to balance, to return to yoga. Yoga is your birthright, perfection is your true nature; the practice of yoga helps to remind us of this essential truth by peeling away the layers that have occulted our true essence.
As a young practitioner, I didn't have any money. My teachers still taught me with the encouragement that I be generous to the future generations of aspirants. To this day, I charge on a sliding scale & never refuse people my services based on money alone. You can pay what you can afford. Generally, I make $100-$150 an hour for private classes, though if you are earnest, sincere & devoted to your healing, then I will teach you regardless of money.
I believe that Yoga & Healing should be available to all regardless of income. Those that have less, pay me less. Those that have more, pay me more & they know in their hearts that they are sponsoring those less fortunate to benefit from my services. Below is a rough outline of the sliding scale correlating annual income with an hourly rate:
Less than $15,000.00 - $0-$50 an hour
$15k - $30k - $60 an hour
$30k - $40k - $80 an hour
$40k - $60k - $100 an hour
$60k - $80k - $120 an hour
$80k - $100k - $150 an hour
$100k - $200k - $200 an hour
$200k - $300k - $300 an hour
$1 billion+ - $1,000+ an hour
